Guys, this is why we love fast, expensive cars. Not because we want to consciously show off, but because our biology sees cars as a form of “sexual signaling”, according to lead researcher Gad Saad at John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. The researchers rounded up 39 young men and put them in a Toyota Camry before a Porsche 911 Cabriolet. They were then asked to drive through an empty street, followed by a street that had lots of women. Each guy was then tested for testosterone levels in his saliva.
The results showed that on either street, testosterone levels remained unchanged when driving the Camry. But behind the wheels of the 911, testosterone levels went up to the same level on either street. The only conclusion that could possibly be drawn is this: The car makes all the difference, and we want a fast, powerful car to showcase our attractiveness.
Saad said it best: “In other words, just put a guy in a Porsche, and his testosterone levels shoot up, whether people watch or not”. So now you can explain to your girlfriend or wife that the urge to spend on your car is out of your control. It is only natural.
