2011 Toyota Vios Mid-life Facelift Launched In Thailand

The 2011 mid-life facelifted Toyota Vios [1] has been officially launched for the Thai market. Changes are mainly for the exterior, although there are also two new colours to choose from as well as minor changes for the interior.
The exterior comes with a redesigned front grille with chrome strip, restyled multi-reflector tail lights, a chrome strip on the boot lid and new 15-inch alloy wheels. The two new colours for the exterior are Blackish Red Mica and Light Blue Mica Metallic. The interior is relatively unchanged except for the centre console and door panels which are now metallic in appearance.
As expected, the mechanicals stay the same. The 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE engine, with 107 bhp (109 PS) at 6000 rpm and 141 Nm at 4200 rpm, remains mated either to a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.
UMW Toyota Motor [2] has yet to introduce the facelifted Vios for Malaysia, although that should be soon since the new Vios' outline has already been put up on Toyota [3]'s Malaysian website to act as a “teaser”. The new prices are listed as estimated, but it seems UMW Toyota Motor has taken the chance to increase prices—not unlike what Honda Malaysia [4] did recently with Honda City [5], Vios' main rival.

With Spyker successfully buying over Saab [1], Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars, is focusing on creating a new premium compact hatchback that will go up against the MINI [2] and the new Audi A1 [3].
Rumours say that the name would be Saab [4] 9-1, and that it would be based on Opel Astra hatchback's platform. Muller has reportedly insisted on a car that is instantly recognisable and inherently Saab in appearance.
The Saab 92, which was in production from 1949–1956, has been thrown around as a likely source of inspiration for the new 9-1. And the two renderings, based on the 92, could well be how the 9-1 turns out to be...

Geneva Motor Show: Carlsson C25

Remember the Carlsson C25 [1], the limited-edition supercar based on Mercedes-Benz [2] CL-Class? It looks great in rendering, but not so much in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show [3]. The C25 appears as dramatic as cars come, with a full body kit, flared wheel arches, large rims and huge air vents. Maybe it is down to the colour scheme—or that out-of-place strip of orange paint on the bonnet—because the C25 kind of disappoints looks-wise.
It will not on the roads, however. Powering the rear-wheel driven supercar is a 743-bhp, 1150-Nm 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12 that brings about 100 km/h from rest in 3.7 seconds and eventually on to 352 km/h. The C25 is supposedly suitable for everyday driving, too, thanks to a self-adjusting suspension system.
Sadly, for the ultra-rich performance-addict among us, all 25 units that Carlsson has planned to produce are sold out. So, the gallery of live photos is as good as it gets...

With no Toyota [1] sports car on the market for some time now, the automotive scene was of course fascinated when Toyota first unveiled the FT-86 sports car at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show [2]. While we wait patiently for the car's arrival in 2012, Toyota has released a “family portrait” showing the new FT-86 alongside three of its spiritual predecessors, the most important of which should be the Corolla AE86 followed by the Celica and the Supra. Other shots show the FT-86 in clearer details than before.
The FT-86 would be a lightweight sports car, with a kerb weight as low as 1250 kg in production form. It would be powered by Subaru [3]'s 2.0-litre boxer engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The rear-wheel drive chassis would feature a double-wishbone setup at the front and multi-link at the rear. Toyota has only made known so much thus far, so until we get more details, enjoy the gallery of official photos!

Following the success of the last-generation Lamborghini [1] Gallardo Superleggera, the lightweight, stripped-down version of the new Gallardo LP560-4 [2] was just waiting to be introduced. And, indeed, it has made its debut appearance at the Geneva Motor Show [3].
Mechanically, the 5.2-litre V10 has been tuned to produce 10 horses more at 562 bhp (570 hp, hence the LP570-4 name), while the maximum torque stays unchanged at 540 Nm. Lamborghini's E-gear transmission remains standard, although a manual gearbox can be chosen for no extra money.
The power gains are accompanied by the shedding of around 70 kg from the standard Gallardo, through the use of lighter materials throughout the car, with carbon-fibre being the choice material.
Boasting a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds, the new Gallardo Superleggera however brings more than just faster straight-line performance; Handling is likely to be sharper too, thanks to a series of aerodynamic and suspension tweaks.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia [1] has launched the C 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, which replaces the C 230 Avantgarde previously on sale, and the C 300 Avantgarde estate, a C-Class [2] body style new to Malaysia. The locally-assembled C 250 CGI sells for RM 287,888, while the fully-imported C 300 estate goes for RM 396,888.
Mercedes-Benz [3] claims that the C 250 CGI boasts better performance and improved fuel economy compared to the C 230. And the figures do support their assertions. In the C 250 CGI lies a 1.8-litre turbocharged, direct-injected in-line four-cylinder engine which generates 201 bhp at 5500 rpm and 310 Nm between 2000–4300 rpm. By comparison, the 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated V6 engine that powers the C 230 produces 201 bhp at 6100 rpm and 245 Nm between 2900–5500 rpm.
In addition to the better performance, fuel economy is supposedly improved by 15 percent to between 12.7–13.9 km/litre. The C 250 CGI, however, comes with a five-speed automatic transmission instead of the seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission in the C 230. The new drivetrain will also feature in the E 250 CGI set for arrival in April.
Using a drivetrain borrowed from the E 300, the C 300 estate is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine, capable of generating 228 bhp at 6000 rpm and 300 Nm between 2500–5000 rpm, paired to the 7G-TRONIC transmission. Standard with the Avantgarde trim is the dynamic handling package, which offers speed-sensitive power-steering and two suspension settings, Comfort and Sport.

Nowadays, it is common for automakers to “leak” official photos or information, just before the unveiling of their new cars. In the case of Audi [1] RS5, a sales brochure was “leaked” out [2] not long before RS5 made its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show [3].
However we came to know about RS5, there is no doubting that the sexy coupe looks great in the metal, adorned by a complete body kit with 19-inch alloy wheels. What's underneath the bonnet is equally impressive: a 4.2-litre V8, reworked from Audi R8's engine, that produces 444 bhp at 8250 rpm and 430 Nm at 4000 rpm.
RS5 goes on sale in Germany from the second quarter of 2010, costing from around 77,700 euros (RM 360,117 without taxes). A pity, then, that there is a good chance that RS5 would not come to Malaysia, considering how we are missing out on the A5 coupe. Read more on RS5's details [4] and enjoy the gallery of live photos!

Naza Officially Becomes Exclusive Chevrolet Distributor For Malaysia

Naza is now the official and exclusive distributor of the Chevrolet [1] brand in Malaysia, adding to its stable of franchised brands which includes Kia [2], Peugeot [3], Ferrari [4], Maserati [5] and Brabus. This comes after the recent breakup between DRB-HICOM and General Motors [6].
By the end of the year, Naza is targeting for there to be 18 3S (sales, service and spare parts) dealerships throughout Malaysia, with five under Naza. That compares to the current eight dealerships in the country.
Another target is to sell 1600 Chevrolet vehicles for the year, the bulk of which are expected to come from Chevrolet Cruze, a mid-size segment sedan that would be launched in the second quarter of 2010. That sales figure, if achieved, will be nearly three times the 564 units sold in 2009.
Naza would eventually introduce a full line-up of Chevrolet vehicles, although no model except for the Cruze was revealed. Naza is also considering local assembly, known as CKD (completely knocked down) operations, for certain models in Naza's Gurun assembly plant in Kedah.

Geneva Motor Show: 2011 MINI Countryman

The 2011 MINI Countryman, the biggest MINI [1] ever, has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show [2]. Countryman has a number of firsts to its name: it is the first MINI to feature five doors (hatch included); and it is also the first MINI to have a four-wheel drive system as an option.
As is expected for a MINI, there is a long list of optional equipments and accessories available to customise the Countryman. Three petrol and two diesel 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines are up for selection, from the 89-bhp engine in the One D to the most powerful 181-bhp engine in the Cooper S. However, the diesel engines are not expected to make it to Malaysia. A six-speed automatic gearbox, sourced from BMW [3], is expected to be paired with the petrol engines for the Malaysian market.
The issue of higher prices aside, Countryman could be compromised dynamically relative to the three-door MINI due to its added weight and height. However, the main problem, for most, would be Countryman's looks—which lacks the cuteness and charisma of smaller MINIs. Looks-wise, Countryman is as un-MINI as it gets, so let's hope it performs up to expectations on the roads when it arrives in the fourth quarter of 2010. For the time being, read more on Countryman's full details [4] and enjoy the gallery of live photos!

The most discussed and most eagerly anticipated car at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show [1] has to be the 2011 all-new Volvo S60, the compact luxury sedan expected to form the bulk of Volvo [2]'s sales for the upcoming years.
Underpinned by a revised Ford Mondeo [3] platform, S60 is billed as “the most dynamic car Volvo has ever presented”, one promising sharper handling and quicker steering. Customers can choose from two chassis variants, Dynamic and Comfort, and four engines, made up of two petrol and two diesel engines. More engines will be added to the range later on.
Volvo still represents the best of automotive safety, and S60 comes with the Collision Warning With Full Auto Brake And Pedestrian Detection system [4] and the City Safety system, among a comprehensive list of safety equipments.
S60's production run will begin in the third quarter of 2010, and if Volvo Car Malaysia [5] is to be believed, S60 will arrive in Malaysia before year's end [6]. Meanwhile, read about S60's full details [7] and view five of S60's videos [8]. Enjoy the gallery of live photos below!

Proposed Fuel Subsidy Plan Officially Scrapped

We tried to dismiss the circulating rumours. We tried to believe that the government will carry out a plan beneficial to Malaysia's long-term future, and not bow to public pressure. But we were wrong. The government has officially scrapped the proposed fuel subsidy plan [1] originally scheduled for implementation on May 1.
Don't get us wrong: the proposed plan was flawed in concept, and is sure to cause a massive headache whether in implementation or enforcement. But it was necessary; the government had to conceive a plan to reduce the money spent on fuel subsidies—in 2009, RM 3.4 billion went to subsidising petrol and RM 1.9 billion to subsidising diesel. The money should have been spent on more productive activities instead, such as, first and foremost, on improving public infrastructure.
So it was great to see the government proposing a plan that not only reduces the fuel subsidies, but takes care of the less well-to-do among us. The plan calls for the mandatory use of MyKad to differentiate Malaysians from foreigners. Naturally, foreigners would have to pay fuel prices at unsubsidised rates. Malaysians would pay fuel prices according to engine capacity and various socio-economic factors. A monthly quota of the amount of subsidised fuel each of us can pump was also discussed.
Regarding the latest decision to scrap the plan for good, the government insists that it is not because the plan is difficult to implement and enforce, but because the government listened to and respects the opinions of Malaysians—most of whom are against the plan.
Whatever the case or rationale, the fact is that, once again, the government has taken policy flip-flopping [2] to the limit; all that manpower and man-hours spent brainstorming, discussing, drafting and announcing the plan has now gone to waste. If the plan is not hard to implement and is necessary for the long-term interest of Malaysia—and it should be considering the time and effort spent drafting it in the first place—why is the government bowing to public pressure... for the umpteenth time?

Italian coach-builder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera gave us a teaser shot of the Bentley Continental Flying Star [1] weeks before the ongoing Geneva Motor Show [2], promising that the Continental GTC [3]-based custom Bentley [4] will blend “the functionality and elegance of the shooting brake body with the driving experience of Bentley”.
Looking at the stunning Flying Star, we are convinced that this is one of the most beautiful and elegant custom- made car, ever. And the Flying Star, with its 6.0-litre W12 engine, should have no problems delivering the effortless driving experience expected of a Bentley.
Initiated by one customer and backed by Bentley, the entire Flying Star project involved a long list of modifications such as extending the roof line, widening the car, installing an all-aluminium, electrically-operated tailgate and aluminium door skins, and designing a completely new rear compartment.
Despite the possibility of attracting tremendous interest and sales, the Flying Star will be created in extremely limited numbers—just 20 units. So, let this Bentley be one of the cars of our dreams. Enjoy the gallery of live and official photos!

Geneva Motor Show: 2011 All-New Mazda5 MPV

The all-new Mazda5 has made its first public appearance at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show [1]. With the new third-generation Mazda5, Mazda [2] hopes to build on the success of the current-generation Mazda5 [3], which has won 37 automotive awards and found 470,153 homes since 2005.
The new Mazda5 will be the first Mazda model to adopt the Nagare design language, which is largely inspired by the flows seen in nature. The end effect is a car with wave-like character lines sweeping along its either side. The front end is similar to the new Mazda3 [4]'s, although the rear appears restrained by comparison to the front and sides.
The seven-seater Mazda5 comes with dual sliding rear doors and easy step-in access for convenience to large families. Inside, Mazda promises more comfortable seats and more intuitive-to-use instruments. Power-sliding rear doors are available depending on the market.
Two engines, a 114-bhp, 165-Nm 1.8-litre and a 149-bhp, 191-Nm 2.0-litre, are available for selection, although either must be paired to a six-speed manual gearbox for now. Equipped with direct-injection and start-stop technologies, the 2.0-litre engine generates 15 percent less emissions compared to the similar-sized engine it replaces.
In line with Mazda's Zoom-Zoom philosophy, Mazda5 has received suspension updates as well as a stiffer body, which should contribute to even better handling. The new Mazda5 should arrive in Malaysia before year's end. Meanwhile, read more about Mazda5 [5] and enjoy the gallery of live photos!

Geneva Motor Show: Proton Emas, Emas Country & Emas3 Hybrid Concepts

Proton [1] has unveiled the trio of Proton hybrid concept cars at the Geneva Motor Show [2]. Named Emas, Emas Country and Emas3, which stands for Eco Mobility Advance Solution and means gold in Bahasa Malaysia, the concept cars are a result of a creative collaboration between Proton, Italdesign Giugiaro and Lotus Engineering.
Proton Emas is meant to be a new type of car that transcends traditional market segmentation, with emphasis on maximising interior space while minimising environmental impact. Each of the three compact-sized concepts—the five-door, four-seater Emas, the three-door, five-seater Emas Country and the three-door, 3+1 seater Emas3—is designed to provide good access to interior room that is comparable to C-, D-segment cars and SUVs.
“We have created a family of models in different configurations but all offering the passenger room of a medium-category car while maintaining the exterior dimensions of a compact mini”, according to Giorgetto Giugiaro, Chairman of Italdesign Giugiaro. “The architecture has been designed in such a way as to allow us to outfit an infinite number of variants without compromising the car's great comfort and extensive interior space”.
The plug-in series hybrid drivetrain is borrowed from the Lotus Evora 414E hybrid concept [3]. Powered by a lithium ion battery pack located between the car's double floor, the rear-mounted electric motor—with continuous power of 45 kW, peak power of 75 kW, and peak torque of 280 Nm—drives the rear wheels; the high peak torque negates the use of a gearbox.
The 51-bhp (at 3500 rpm) 1.2-litre three-cylinder Lotus Range Extender petrol engine, located at the front, functions as a range-extender by recharging the batteries. For added flexibility, the engine can run on either petrol, ethanol or methanol. Proton Emas can travel for 50 km with a fully-charged battery pack, which can be completely recharged in three hours via a normal 220-volt power point. 0-100 km/h takes 14 seconds, while top speed stands at 170 km/h.
With a 2590 mm wheelbase, the specially-designed platform has a raised floorpan to accommodate the batteries in the centre. The seats are therefore higher than the class norm, and are all electrically-adjustable—two design features that Giugiaro says allow for excellent access and optimal use of the available interior space.
The inside is dominated by two TFT screens at the centre of the dashboard. The monitor on the right displays the speedometer, and other key driving parameters as well as the hybrid system energy flows. The monitor on the left displays secondary parameters such as the audio system, telephone and internet access browser. Located beneath the two screens is a touch-screen from which the driver can control all of the car's functions.
While no one from the Proton, Lotus, or Giugiaro camp actually confirmed that Proton Emas will make production, Proton Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Tahir did equate the car to Proton's golden opportunity to enter the global automotive scene.
“The unveiling of the concept cars today reflects the long-term strategy we have in matching global automotive standards as we expand and reinforce our presence worldwide”, Syed Zainal Abidin said. “The aim is to produce the global car for world market in the future”.
However, a lot of questions still need answers: When will we see Proton Emas in production? How much of the car we see here will make it to production? Will Proton address its quality issues once and for all, starting with this car? And, will this be the car to prove that Proton is a brand to be taken seriously on a global stage?

Geneva Motor Show: Peugeot SR1 Concept

Peugeot [1] caused quite a number of hearts to flutter when they first introduced the Peugeot SR1 concept [2], a stunning futuristic roadster that comes with the stance and proportions reminiscent of Aston Martins [3]. Peugeot then killed off our infatuation by confirming that the SR1 will remain a concept car and not make production. Of course, it does little to aid our heartaches when the SR1 looks even better in the metal at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show [4].
Still, the SR1 heralds Peugeot's future styling direction and showcases the HYbrid4 diesel-electric hybrid system—made up of a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine responsible for driving the front wheels and an electric motor for driving the rear wheels. The hybrid drivetrain generates around 315 bhp while returning 20.4 km/litre, giving the SR1 sports-car performance at small-car levels of maintenance.
Looking at the SR1 and analysing the specifications, it becomes glaringly obvious that the SR1 will never meet the roads. Because like with women, how can a car so beautiful be so low in maintenance?

Peugeot caused quite a number of hearts to flutter when they first introduced the Peugeot SR1 concept, a stunning futuristic roadster that comes with the stance and proportions reminiscent of Aston Martins. Peugeot then killed off our infatuation by confirming that the SR1 will remain a concept car and not make production. Of course, it does little to aid our heartaches when the ...

The 2011 Alfa Romeo [1] Giulietta is finally here, only just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show [2]. The successor to the 147 [3], the five-door-only Giulietta hatchback represents Alfa Romeo's, as well as Italy's, answer to Volkswagen Golf [4] and Ford Focus [5]. As expected, Giulietta is handsome in the metal, bearing a particularly striking rear end. Then again, it is hard to name an Alfa Romeo that does not look good.
Both Golf and Focus boast class-leading dynamics and handling, an area that Giulietta will need to at least come close to if Alfa Romeo is to achieve its 100,000 units annual sales target. Giulietta will arrive in European showrooms in a couple of months, and should eventually make it to Malaysia. Until then, enjoy the gallery of live shots! Head over to read more about Giulietta's details [6] and view a video [7] released by Alfa Romeo.

Lotus Racing may have missed out on Petronas [1], but it has found an even better-known sponsor in CNN International, one of the world's leading news channel. The two companies have entered into a long-term partnership deal which will see CNN logos being featured prominently on the T127 race cars [2], drivers' overalls and other team clothing.
“We are very proud to welcome CNN into the Lotus Racing family. It is a sign of the positive impact we have already made in the global business market that such a familiar brand... has made the decision to partner with us”, said team principal Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes.
The deal also drew praise from Rani Raad, CNN International Advertising Sales' senior vice president: “This unique partnership with Lotus Racing takes CNN International into a new era of marketing and promotions and puts us in front of a worldwide audience of millions”.

Geneva Motor Show: Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid Concept

The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid concept has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show [1]. Based on Evora's platform, the 414E Hybrid concept is meant as a showcase of Lotus [2]' hybrid technology, as well as Evora's chassis architecture, to fellow automakers which could be interested in buying.
As previously announced [3], the 414E Hybrid concept is powered by a plug-in series hybrid drivetrain. Power comes from two electric motors, one on each rear wheel, with each motor producing 204 bhp or 207 hp (hence the 414 name) and 400 Nm. Integrated into a common transmission housing, a single-speed reduction transmission allows for torque vectoring between the two rear wheels.
Electrical power is stored in a lithium ion battery pack that can be recharged either by using a common household plug or through the 47-bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder Lotus Range Extender petrol engine.
0-96 km/h takes less than four seconds. Running on a fully-charged battery pack alone, the 414E Hybrid concept has a range of 56 km, which is extended to more than 480 km with the Lotus Range Extender petrol engine recharging the batteries.
Like most hybrids, the 414E Hybrid concept is near-silent on the move, which explains the point of Lotus' HALOsonic, a system that simulates four engine sounds for the driver's pleasure while providing an audible warning to nearby pedestrians. Also interesting is the Sport mode that simulates a seven-speed transmission.

Geneva Motor Show: All-New 2011 Porsche Cayenne

Porsche [1] has unveiled the all-new Cayenne at the Geneva Motor Show [2], which officially starts today. Despite being longer, 48 mm in length and 40 mm in wheelbase, Cayenne is lighter than before, thanks to the extensive use of aluminium throughout the body and the removal of the low-range gearbox.
The entry-level Cayenne has the option of either a 296-bhp 3.6-litre V6 or a 240-bhp 3.0-litre V6. The Cayenne S is powered by a 395-bhp 4.8-litre V8, while the range-topping Cayenne Turbo comes with a 493-bhp 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8.
The centre of attention is, however, the Cayenne Hybrid, whose petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain consists of a 328-bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine paired to a 34 kW electric motor which sits between the engine and gearbox. Overall, the hybrid drivetrain churns out 375 bhp and 580 Nm from just 1000 rpm. The best part—the 193 grams/km emission level and 12.2 km/litre fuel economy.
The current Cayenne [3] is Porsche's best-selling model, accounting for 50 percent of the company's profits. So the new Cayenne shoulders tremendous expectations when it goes on sale across Europe on May 29. Enjoy the gallery of live photos of the Cayenne!
